How The Boston Red Sox Dominated Facebook While Winning The 2013 World Series

WorldSeriesFBFanMapThe Boston Red Sox wrapped up the 2013 World Series title Wednesday night with a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, and the teams’ performances on Facebook mirrored the on-field action, as the Red Sox were responsible for 62 percent of World Series chatter on the social network, compared with 38 percent for the Cardinals, and Red Sox Designated Hitter and First Baseman David Ortiz, who was voted Most Valuable Player of the World Series, received four times more buzz than any other player.

The top five demographic groups discussing the Fall Classic on Facebook were dominated by men:

  1. Men 25-34
  2. Men 35-44
  3. Men 18-24
  4. Men 45-54
  5. Women 25-34

Not surprisingly, the two ball clubs’ home states were the top two states in terms of Facebook buzz about the World Series. Here are the top 10 states:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. Missouri
  3. California
  4. Illinois
  5. New York
  6. Florida
  7. New Jersey
  8. Pennsylvania
  9. Connecticut
  10. New Hampshire

And the top 10 players in terms of buzz were:

  1. Ortiz
  2. Red Sox Catcher David Ross
  3. Red Sox Pitcher Jon Lester
  4. Cardinals Outfielder Carlos Beltran
  5. Red Sox Third Baseman Will Middlebrooks
  6. Red Sox Outfielder Jonny Gomes
  7. Cardinals Pitcher Michael Wacha
  8. Red Sox Second Baseman Dustin Pedroia
  9. Red Sox First Baseman Mike Napoli
  10. Red Sox Shortstop Steven Drew
