Avast Acquires Facebook App Security Firm Secure.me

By Justin Lafferty

Secure.me, a watchdog for Facebook application security, has been acquired by Avast Software, a popular antivirus software company. Secure.me has connected with 90 million Facebook profiles around the world, alerting users to how much information their apps are taking.

Secure.me’s Facebook features will be available through Avast later this year.

Mario Grobholz, Secure.me CEO and co-founder, commented on the deal in a blog post:

I am overwhelmed that our vision has reached its destination. The deal with Avast is the most crucial milestone in our company’s history. This new setup will allow us to design security for the user to protect their data independent from which device is utilized and from where it is being accessed from. Our mission will remain the same: We will continue our dedication to provide a safe and carefree online experience for everyone. We can now do this at a much wider scale, with even more power and at a higher speed.

Avast CEO Vincent Stackler welcomed Secure.me in a press release:

The acquisition reinforces Avast’s position as a worldwide leader in security. By including Secure.me’s cutting-edge social-privacy and security technologies in our own security offerings, we will be giving customers even greater confidence in their online experience, whether they are on a PC, tablet, or a mobile device.
