Are Empty Subways The New Double Rainbows? [Interview]

When Yonathan Elias went to bed a couple of nights ago he had no idea that in the morning he would wake up a viral YouTube star, but that’s exactly what happened. A video that he uploaded to YouTube, freaking out about an empty DC Metro car, double rainbow-style, is spreading like wildfire right now. I had the opportunity to ask Yonathan a few questions about himself, his video, and what going viral has been like for him so far. Read on to find out more. Before we get to my interview with Yonathan, check out his video below. I have to admit that I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, but as soon as I saw this video I was cheered right up. I love seeing such pure happiness and enthusiasm over things that other people might not think twice about. It was Paul Vasquez’s true, unbridled enthusiasm that made Double Rainbow so popular, and I think Yonathan expresses an incredibly similar enthusiasm over the empty DC Metro. (Note: Beginning may be NSFW due to language—it’s hard to contain yourself when you are this excited!). So what does Yonathan have to think about this whole thing? Check out my interview with him below. Megan at Social Times: Can you tell us a little bit about your first thoughts when you got on that empty Metro train? What compelled you to start jumping up and down on the seats and running around screaming? Yonathan Elias: I was coming from shooting my show Sound Pulse, shown on EBS (Ethiopian Broadcast Service) and was on the phone with my cousin. I was off the Silverspring stop on the Redline. Since I am from California I got a little freaked out when I walked into the empty car, but felt it was the perfect opportunity to film myself having fun. So I hung up with my cousin and went to work. LOL…I am just a fun loving guy, so that is the main reason I did what I did. I’m a big kid inside! Megan: Did you expect the video would take off so quickly? Yonathan: I DEFINITELY did not expect this to take off like it has. I am actually very shocked and amazed that it did. It feels great to know that people can appreciate my enjoyment. Megan: What kind of response have you gotten so far? Yonathan: I have been getting a lot of positive feedback and it makes me feel good. I have been answering most of the comments that I see—good and bad. But thank God they are mostly good. I don’t like negativity and didn’t do this for any kind of exposure. But I have been getting contacted about the video from a lot of people via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. They are talking about Autotuning it, haha. So we will see what happens! Megan: Finally, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do? Yonathan: I am a California native. My family is Ethiopian and Italian and I moved to the East coast in August to pursue schooling at Howard University. I am a TV personality and socialite, and I host a lot of local events and have a top ten music video countdown show in Africa. I have always been known as a big kid who enjoys the little things in life and that will never change, as you can see! Congratulations to Yonathan on his YouTube success.
