Social Gaming Contest App Goes Viral On Facebook

By Jennifer Moire

If your favorite sport is playing social games, then you may want to join the Facebook community called App Champ. Or perhaps you already have: App Champ claims to have gone viral, accumulating more than 5,000 fans in just three weeks.

The concept behind App Champ is pretty simple: Every month, it runs a contest on Facebook. The winner with the highest score in a designated social game on Facebook wins an iPad. The focus is on a different game each month; in April, the player with the highest score from Temple Run wins. Fans must submit their screen shots to the App Champ wall to be considered.

If you don’t have the highest score in a Facebook game, you can still be a winner, because the folks behind App Champ also award one $50 gift card for the Apple iTunes App Store to the owner of a randomly selected screen shot.

According to App Champ, having a huge, built-in global audience — every person who plays game apps on their smartphones — helped its contest go viral.

App Champ also supplemented its reach by using the official Facebook ad system. Nearly 80 percent of the people who saw the App Champ ad liked its page. In addition, organic Facebook likes came from its website.

In the future, the group hopes to enable fans to send their high-score screenshots directly via the Facebook app, and, of course, to award even bigger and better prizes.
