More than ever, businesses are looking for ways to monitor, measure, and drive sales through social media. In the last year, enterprise software giant Salesforce has purchased two social media marketing service providers, Radian6 and Buddy Media, toward that end. As social media hits the mainstream, professionals have revamped their LinkedIn profiles to reflect the emerging trends.

Sometimes intuition wins over accuracy. Certain phrases associated with social media like “social analytics” or “social intelligence” are actually psychology or sociology terms. Social media professionals appropriated these terms and used them without putting “media” in the middle to clarify which industry they’re in. As a result, digital strategists sometimes pop up alongside college professors in a search. But if “social analytics” seems right to you, you’re probably not alone.

In other cases, there are multiple ways to describe the same skill. Where the terms seem similar, it might be helpful to take a look at a successful person in your industry or a top company and see what language they are using to describe the job that you’re doing now.
