5 Great Examples of How Nonprofits Should Use Twitter

Nonprofit organizations can definitely benefit from starting a Twitter account. But, how does a nonprofit group get followers and make the account worth its while? What kind of tweets should they post? I did a little poking around on Twitter and found some organizations that are excellent models for a new non-profit to follow. Socialbrite, a site dedicated to social media for nonprofits, highly recommends that you use Twitter Lists to explore scores or hundreds of other worthy organizations and individuals on Twitter. You will need to note down their causes and determine if they align with yours. The lists to consider are human rights, environmental issues or education. If you like their content in their tweets, then take a moment and examine what it is about those tweets that you like. Then, you can try to emulate those positive features into your tweets. Water.org: Bringing clean water to those who lack it (@water) Water.org is a strong group of dedicated people who are concerned with engaging and working with communities to meet their own water and sanitation needs. Their current efforts focus on Asia, Africa and Central America. Quite a few celebrity names are involved with this group. It is a campaign worth supporting and following on Twitter. So far @water has 459,666 followers. Donors Choose: Supporting public education (@DonorsChoose) DonorsChoose is a nonprofit that links donors to public classrooms in need. Teachers post materials they need, donors help each request on an individualized basis. The teachers and students often turn around and offer notes of thanks. It’s a grassroots movement as the model for future philanthropy. So far @DonorsChoose has 88,639 followers. Doctors Without Borders: Stepping in to treat the sick (@MSF_USA) Doctors Without Borders is part of the international organization Médecins Sans Frontière, It is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France. The nonprofit group provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect or catastrophe largely because of armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, and exclusion from health care or natural disasters. In 1999, the group won the Nobel Peace Prize. So far @MSF_USA has 146,429 followers. UNICEF: Humanitarian action on behalf of kids (@UNICEF) The United Nations Children’s Fund was founded in 1946 and remains “the driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized.” A resilient and important nonprofit, they are positively worth following. So far @UNICEF has 598,640 followers. DoSomething: Rallying youths to get involved (@dosomething) Nancy Lublin is the tweeter responsible for Dosomething.org, a group that rallies the younger generation to get involved in causes (or “rock causes,” as Nancy says) that they have personal interest in or care about. Nancy has received accolades for her work, such as being featured in a top 10 list of @mobileyouth reaching campaigners. Awesome, Nancy! So far @dosomething has 474,961 followers. 474,961. You might want to do a little poking around on yourself on Twitter. You might find some organizations that are excellent models for using Twitter to help promote your nonprofit.
