2K and Firaxis Games have announced Sid Meier’s Starships, an upcoming turn-based strategy game set in the Civilization: Beyond Earth universe. The game will be released on iPad later this year (as well as PC and Mac), and it will allow players to command a fleet of starships as they complete quests and protect planets throughout the galaxy.

In Sid Meier’s Starships, players will build a planetary federation, expanding its influence while researching new technologies and engaging in turn-based space combat using customizable starships. In each new campaign, players will complete “dynamically generated tactical combat missions” for increased replay value.

In addition, owners of Civilization: Beyond Earth can expect an eventual connection to Starships, with 2K saying that this connection will “enhance and expand the depth of both game experiences.”

Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games, released a statement on the game’s development:

When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth. What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth? My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration.

Sid Meier’s Starships will be released on iPad, PC and Mac in spring 2015. Check back soon for more.
