2014 has been a big year for social media, notably in the marketing and advertising space, with a number of key updates, launches and features from the major players.
In February Facebook bought WhatsApp for a staggering $19 billion, closely followed by an acquisition of Oculus, the virtual reality company.
Twitter snapped up Gnip in April, announced its new buy button in September and Twitter Offers in November.
Month-by-month Snapchat became an increasingly significant social media player, especially amongst the key 18-34 demographic, and Instagram finally debuted its highly-anticipated ads platform to an international audience.
