Nearly 20M Facebook Interactions During Wimbledon

The 2013 Wimbledon Championships tennis tournament is in the books, with two first-time champions having been crowned — Andy Murray of the U.K., marking the host country’s first Wimbledon winner in 77 years, and Marion Bartoli of France — and Facebook Consumer Content Manager Alex Walker and Data Editor Robert D’Onofrio reported in a post on the Facebook Newsroom that there were nearly 20 million global interactions (posts, comments, and likes) leading into the final matches.

Following are highlights of the Wimbledon-related information shared by Walker and D’Onofrio:

  • Murray added more than 230,000 likes during the last week of the tournament, bringing his total to nearly 1.3 million at the time, and to nearly 1.5 million at the time of this post. His fan base is largest in the U.K., India, the U.S., Argentina, and Egypt.
  • Runner-up Novak Djokovic gained some 30,000 likes during the week, and his total is currently more than 3.1 million. His fan base is largest in Serbia, India, the U.S., Italy, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
  • The top countries in terms of people talking about this were the U.K., the U.S., India, Italy, and Australia.
  • Bartoli’s PTAT doubled Saturday, the day of her victory, marking the most buzz for a female player since No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova was upset in round two.
  • Leading up to the final match, eventual runner-up Sabine Lisicki of Germany had five times the PTAT of eventual champion Bartoli, spurred by Lisicki’s upset of No. 1 Serena Williams last Monday. Mentions of Lisicki skyrocketed nearly 12,000 percent after last Monday’s match.

The top five men, in terms of PTAT, were:
