Alexandra Wallace Issues Apology For Racist YouTube Rant

All day yesterday, and into the wee hours of this morning, Alexandra Wallace was sparking controversy and discussion on the Web, following a racist rant that she uploaded to YouTube called 'Asians In The Library'. With her name trending on Twitter, a plethora of responses being uploaded to YouTube, and blog posts about the incident spreading like wildfire, we've all been waiting to see whether Alexandra would respond. She has. Read on to find out what she had to say. Yesterday, Alexandra's response was published at the DailyBruin.com, UCLA's online news source. Alexandra said: "Clearly the original video posted by me was inappropriate. I cannot explain what possessed me to approach the subject as I did, and if I could undo it, I would. I'd like to offer my apology to the entire UCLA campus. For those who cannot find it within them to accept my apology, I understand." Despite Alexandra's apology, UCLA's associate vice chancellor and dean of students, Robert Naples, said he found the video "beyond distasteful." He said, "We'll be taking a look at the language that she uses in the video to see if it violates any codes under the student code, perhaps regarding harassment." Though he pointed out that the student code does not usurp the authority of the First Amendment. UCLA's Chancellor, Gene Block, said, "I am appalled by the thoughtless and hurtful comments of a UCLA student posted on YouTube. I believe that speech that expresses intolerance toward any group of people on the basis of race or gender, or sexual, religious or cultural identity is indefensible and has no place at UCLA." Chancellor Block posted his own video response to Alexandra's original video 'Asians In The Library' on YouTube: Chancellor Block's apology was what I think a lot of people were hoping for from Alexandra. You'll notice that in her apology she doesn't even apologize to any groups or people apart from "the entire UCLA campus." But what about the rest of the community outside of UCLA that was offended by her video? According to an update last night at the Daily Bruin, despite Alexandra Wallace's apology, she has "received multiple death threats." Naples said, "If she's received a death threat, I find that as deplorable as her original YouTube video. If this is the response of students on campus, we've got a lot of work to do."
