Most of us are too busy going about our daily routines to stop and notice the sheer beauty of the passage of time. Taking the time out of our day to watch a single sunset or sunrise, the passing of fluffy white clouds across the sky, or the beauty of the hustle and bustle of life in a busy intersection can often be energizing and illuminating, but many of us just don't have the time. That's where time lapse videos come in. Time lapse videos capture a scene over hours, days, weeks, months or even years and then speeds it up to allow us to view the passage of time in a matter of minutes or seconds. I always find that watching time lapse footage of sunsets, nature or city life gives me a newfound appreciation for the all of the beauty present in the world around us. That's why I decided to put together a list of ten of the most breathtaking time lapse videos that I've ever seen. They are all from Vimeo, a site that I have always found to be a treasure trove not only for time lapse, but for amazing creative online video content in general. NYC - Mindrelic Timelapse I was inspired to put this list together after seeing this amazing time lapse video of New York City this morning. I have been living in Israel for the last five years but before I lived here I lived and worked in New York City and this video made me miss New York like crazy. It's a beautiful portrait of the city that captures New York like nothing else I've ever seen. Iceland, EyjafjallajÃ¶kull - May 1st and 2nd, 2010 The city is beautiful, but nothing compares to the awesomeness of nature. When the EyjafjallajÃ¶kull was erupting in Iceland, Sean Stiegemeier flew there in order to create time lapse footage of the eruption. It really is spectacular. Bathtub IV This video is great. I love it because the way it was shot makes the scenery, the people the boats and everything look like toys and models. But creator Keith Loutit assures in the videos description that the film is 100% real. Timelapse Montage The following clip is made up of all of the time lapse footage shot by Mike Flores over the span of a year or so. What I love about this is that it looks like it was shot on another planet. Stomacher - Untitled/Dark Divider Here's another video from Sean Stiegemeier. He writes in the description that this video represents his foray into the world of time lapse and includes footage of Prague, Japan, Banff, Utah, Oregon, California and more. The Longest Way 1.0 - one year walk/beard grow time lapse Time lapse doesn't have to be reserved just for locations (i.e. cities or nature). It is also a great way to show other forms of growth. Christoph Rehage created this amazing time lapse video of his trip walking 4646km through China as his beard grew and he lived life and grew personally from his travel experience. Hayaku: A Time Lapse Journey Through Japan I have always wanted to visit Japan and this video by Brad Kremer just makes me want to visit even more. The footage is absolutely amazing. I almost feel like I'm there already! Death Cab for Cutie - Little Bribes Creator Ross Ching says in his description that he "pulled out every time lapse, stop motion and live action camera trick" that he could think of. He really did and it was totally worth it. This video is amazing. Aside from ordinary scenery time lapse it has time lapse footage of cheese burning, water drying and more. How many time lapse shots can you spot? Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse Did you see the lunar eclipse last month on December 21, 2010? If you missed it, here it is, packed down into one 2 minute long, breathtaking clip. ANTS in my scanner > a five year timelapse Finally, FranÃ§ois Vautier shows some real creativity in this video. He installed an ant colony inside his scanner and scanned the next each week for five years. The results are pretty amazing.
