The cry of “shuffle up and deal” kicked off the second annual Texas Hold ’Em Charity Poker Tournament benefitting TORCH, as more than 150 communications industry professionals and other guests joined to play a little poker and raise money for the organization. TORCH transforms the lives of underserved New York City public high school students by providing intensive exposure to career training and opportunities in communications and the arts, all while facilitating a meaningful way of increasing the diversity of the workforce in those industries.
TORCH alum Ricardo Slater kicked off the evening thanking all those in attendance for their crucial support that helps to continue the organization’s mission. In addition to a great showing from the communications industry, the tables included professional poker players Billy Gazes, Andy Frankenberger, Michael Martin, Erik Seidel and Robert Varkonyi, as well as actor Patrick Wilson, former NY Giants offensive tackle Adam Koets and New York Red Bulls midfielder Joel Lindpere.
First place finisher Dave Corwin won a prize package that included a $10,000 seat in the World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas. Others reaching the final table received prize packages that included golf outings, sports packages, dinners and weekend hotel packages at Borgata and Caesars AC. But everyone in attendance was a winner, knowing that they contributed to helping high school students who might not get another chance to fulfill their potential and brighten their future.
