Women's World Cup Final Sets Twitter Record

Yesterday’s edge-of-your-seat women’s World Cup soccer final between the U.S. and Japan set a record for the most tweets per second: 7,196. President Obama and Katie Couric were among those who helped set that record. Popular hashtags for yesterday’s game included #USWNT and #worldcupfinal.

In May, the announcement of Osama bin Laden’s death reached 5,106 tweets per second. And the men’s final last year reached a 2010 record of 3,051 tweets per second when Spain scored the winning goal.
