Lana Del Rey is the latest test of whether all publicity is good publicity.
Over the weekend, the Internet celeb made a much-maligned appearance on Saturday Night Live. Non-Internet famous people tweeted about how bad it was. Regular folks just watching TV said it was terrible. And famous media people vented in emails to other famous media people about its horribleness. When the show’s host for the week, Daniel Radcliffe, came to her defense, it made news.
Problem number one is the song isn’t exactly a performance-friendly one. It’s super slow (though hauntingly effective, like a Tim Burton lullaby) and she’s dressed like she’s going to leave the studio and get married at City Hall.
But, the performance did get her a lot of exposure that she otherwise would not have received. Maybe amid all that criticism, some folks will go to the Web, check out her recorded stuff, and actually buy her album. Or she could crap out before the album even gets off the ground. Good buzz, bad buzz, no buzz. Hmm.
