Which to Use: 'Latino' or 'Hispanic'?

The Los Angeles Times has published a memo from its assistant managing editor Henry Fuhrmannexplaining the newspaper’s preferred use of the term “Latino” over “Hispanic,” saying the term is “in keeping with the practices and sensibilities of residents of our region.”

There doesn’t seem to be a general media rule about this. A Chicago Tribune story published today sticks with “Latino.” But a U.S. News and World Report story from Friday uses the terms interchangeably. (The story is also written by a reporter from Hispanic Outlook on Higher Education magazine.)
