Meet Joseph Koblenzer.
He is a 73-year-old man, former war veteran, and now standing in the unemployment due to the actions of Cracker Barrel. What actions? According to CBS Tampa Bay, Koblenzer was a man with a heart for the needy.
In fact, it was the appearance of a needy man and woman (on separate occasions) who cost him a nice job as a three-year greeter of said folksy eatery. His deviant act of thievery? A corn muffin, packets of mayonnaise and tartar sauce, coffee, and a coke and a smile.
Yeah, we hate him too.
“It was a fun job; a job really suited for me,” Koblenzer told CBS Tampa Bay upon learning of his demise at Cracker Barrel.
When a man who looked like he was homeless came by two weeks ago, Koblenzer didn’t think twice about helping him. “He looked a little needy,” said Koblenzer. “He asked if I had any mayonnaise and some tarter sauce. He said he was going to cook a fish.”
Koblenzer didn’t hesitate to help the man, bringing him tarter sauce packets. “I got it for him. As I walked out I put a corn muffin in.”
And then, the GM of the place called Koblenzer in his office and sent his septuagenarian behind smooth out the door, with no more “free” corn bread.
Evidently, this was his “third strike,” as his agape heart gave a soft drink and a cup of coffee to a woman on separate occassion, even though he insisted the woman paid for it. And then social media blew up following the media story, which is what prompted this:
“Mr. Koblenzer has worked as a host at Cracker Barrel’s Sarasota store since April 2011. During the time he was employed, he violated the Company’s policies regarding consuming food without paying or giving away free food, on five separate occasions. Mr. Koblenzer received multiple counselings and written warnings reminding him about the company’s polices and the consequences associated with violating them. On the fifth occasion, again per Company policy, Mr. Koblenzer was terminated.”
But wait! They forgot something. What on earth could the force field be? Oh yeah…
“Cracker Barrel is grateful for and honors Mr. Koblenzer’s service to our country as we honor all service men and women and their families.”
Okay, America. Back off already. Go get your hot cross buns off the protest line.
