Colin Crowell has been named Twitter’s new global head of public policy, a hire that beefs up the company’s Washington D.C. presence. Previously, Crowell was an adviser to the FCC chairman Julius Genachowski, working on broadband and other Internet policies. And he served as an aide to Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) also working on technology issues. He’ll start his new job mid-September.

Twitter added Adam Sharp, a former C-SPAN EP of digital, in November.

Of course, everyone in government from the White House to members of Congress are using ¬†Twitter and other digital platforms to reach voters with their message. But social networks have also been criticized for privacy issues, its role in the London riots, and other areas. Politico says Twitter is a leader in technology’s interaction with Washington, but some are waiting for the company to launch a D.C. office.

As evidenced by the e-G8 meeting in May, tech companies and governments recognize the need to interact, but the relationship is still in the making.
