Romney Rethinking His Messaging After Santorum Wins

Rick Santorum has gotten a tremendous jolt after his wins in Colorado, Missouri, and Minnesota earlier this week. His presidential campaign raised $1 million twice this week. And supporters are becoming increasingly confident that he is a viable candidate. After he got whomped, Mitt Romney came out with his guns blazing, aiming not just at Santorum, but Newt Gingrich and Republicans as a whole. With some time to reflect, he and his supporters are toning that down. But others are calling for him to ramp up his messaging in other ways. Given the opportunity on a conference call yesterday, two Oklahoma state officials talked up Romney but steered clear of criticism of Santorum. Romney is also focusing on himself, choosing to spend his time talking up his conservative stance. Republicans have long had a problem swallowing Romney's claims of conservatism. And now, those in Congress, have told him to "step up" his message. "Playing it safe, which Romney tends to do, is not going to get it for him," said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC). A tweet from Weekly Standard reporter Fred Barnes went further: “He lacks a compelling conservative message. He’d better get one soon.” With Santorum, Romney, and Gingrich speaking today at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Romney has a chance to make his case. However, The Washington Post reports, support for Romney is low, even though many believe he will, inevitably, be the Republican presidential candidate because he has the bank account to do so.
