RIP Bev Norwood, Golf’s Top PR Man

The man responsible for telling the story of professional golf to the sports media and the world at large has passed. Today IMG announced that Bev Norwood, a constant presence on and off the green since the late 70’s, died earlier this week after a short battle with cancer.

After starting his career as a sports writer based in North Carolina, he became media manager for longtime PGA Tour champ Arnold Palmer and representative for IMG’s golf clients.

In a blog post, Golf Digest‘s Ron Sirak describes Norwood as “a publicist who ‘got it'” by befriending golf’s top stars and journalists, writing “He was such a good source of information I never wanted to even give a hint where my information was coming from.” IMG vice chairman Alistair Johnston writes “Bev Norwood was a great storyteller, but he never wanted to be part of the story.”

In other words, a classic PR man.
