Anderson Cooper revealed in an email to The Daily Beast’s Andrew Sullivan that he’s gay. “I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud,” he adds. Perhaps more importantly, he said that he felt he needed to say something on this topic because people may have mistaken his reticence for feelings of shame. Moreover, instances of bullying and discrimination make speaking out a necessity.
“I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t mean an end to a small amount of personal space. But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy,” Cooper writes at the end of his comments.
Cooper’s network CNN has tanked in the ratings, reaching its lowest point in more than a decade during Q2 2012. Politico reports that the network is lacking in “editorial leadership” and in the midst of an “identity crisis” in light of the dominance Fox and MSNBC. In response, CNN SVP and Washington bureau chief Sam Feist says, “We don’t do what they do. We produce different products. I don’t think CNN should be in the same category as they are.” The New York Post says internal disagreements are to blame as well.

A 22-year-old intern for the AP was found dead in an elevator shaft in Mexico City over the weekend. Armando Montano had worked on a few stories since arriving in June, including the shooting of three federal police officers. The cause of his death is being investigated.
