Rick Perry's Campaign is Falling Apart Before Our Eyes

Apparently, with Herman Cain out of the GOP race, Rick Perry has decided to become the new gaffe machine. Over the weekend, Perry added to the list when he called Solyndra, the bankrupt solar energy company that is causing problems for the Obama administration, a country. After the Iowa debate on Saturday, Perry stuck around and talk to people. That's when trouble ensued. "No greater example of it than this administration sending millions of dollars into the solar industry, and we lost that money," Perry said, discussing what he says has been the President's mishandling of government spending. "I want to say it was over $500 million that went to the country Solynda." Not only did he call it a country, he forgot the "r." Oh you, Rick Perry. This comes hot on the heels of his misstatement about the number of Supreme Court justices -- there are nine, he said eight -- and his inability to remember Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s name during an interview with The Des Moines Register. Again, this comes as Perry was trying to criticize the President, this time for appointing "activist judges" and for something about prayer in schools. Really, who knows what he was talking about. He was saying words and said them wrong. And, of course, we can't forget that offensive and craptastic anti-gay ad, "Strong," that Perry released last week. The ad has led to backlash (the commenting capability has been disabled on the ad), a Rick Perry staffer called it "nuts," and now Perry is being heckled over it. (Total aside, that staffer, strategist Tony Fabrizio, was outed by the organization GOProud, which has led to Andrew Breitbart stepping down from the board. Insanity.) The ad has sparked the now-familiar Internet meme tackled by The Second City comedy troupe, Funny or Die, a rabbi, and others. Add to that Perry's notorious debate gaffe and any number of other things and you've got one mess of a campaign. Basically, we're watching the erosion of this candidate day by day. Perry once sat atop the leader board. Now, he's a joke, with each mistake quickly taking away his credibility and driving away supporters. Is this the new political flame-out? The tragicomic trickle of errors and/or scandal with candidates sticking around until they just can't any longer? [image via TPM]
