Nicki Minaj and MTV host Sway Calloway visited a Chicago school yesterday on behalf of the education network and advocacy group Get Schooled Foundation and its six-week-long program Get MotivatED, which encouraged increased school attendance. Twenty-five schools competed in the initiative, but Collins Academy came out the winner with a seven percent improvement. During the course of the six weeks, the initiative also engaged with students through technology, pop culture, and media challenges that reinforced the importance of going to school.
For their prize, Minaj became principal of Collins Academy for a day, meeting with students for photos, teaching an English class, and presenting three students with $10,000 college scholarships from Comcast. She and Sway also hosted a school-wide assembly to talk about the program.
An additional 12 students won $1,000 scholarships, teachers at some of the participating schools were honored by students, and one winner of a video contest focused on the importance of education, Ezekiel Jones, will come to New York so he and his video can be featured on the BET program 106 & Park. Congrats to all the kids!
