Kelly Cutrone Says Fashion People Don't Care About KimYe

Kelly Cutrone has never been one to mince words. You wanna cry? Take that elsewhere. If your body is disturbing, she's gonna let you know. Certainly she's not going to tone it down for Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. Speaking with the New York Daily News, Cutrone says point blank, "I don’t think there’s one person who really works in the fashion industry who gives a flying f--- about Kanye West." There's more! "I think they have no influence in the fashion world whatsoever," she continued. Boom! Notice, however, how specific Cutrone is about her comments. It's not that they're not influencers. She actually acknowledges in the story that KimYe are pop culture influencers. But in the fashion world, they wield far less power. It's an important distinction that Vogue seemed to be making when they accompanied their KimYe cover photo with the hashtag #WorldsMostTalkedAboutCouple. The magazine recognized that they could get some social media/pop culture mileage out of including them. But in terms of fashion, are they standouts? Probably not. The dress on the cover didn't break any new bridal ground. Kanye has rocked a few masks and kilts. But that, does not, a fashion icon make. PRs these days are always looking for influencers to put on an event list, to include as a "brand ambassador," to speak on some topic that the brand wants to make a part of its reputation. But it's important to choose the right influencer for the right situation. Kim K has a very successful mobile app all about living the superficial Hollywood life, and an upcoming book filled with her own selfies. Clearly, she knows a thing or two about manipulating the media in a way that keeps her in the spotlight without really offering much else besides her image. If you simply want someone to generate buzz, she can do that. But to make a lasting mark -- someone who will speak more intrinsically about really anything -- she's probably not the one to call. And honestly, she doesn't put herself out there in that way. (Kanye's another story. His music is great and he wants to make big statements about other things, but...) Together, their fashion choices aren't much to write home about 90 percent of the time, so Cutrone called them on that. Total aside, the best thing the two of them have done together is the "Bound 2" video. It hits the appropriate level of over-the-top kitsch -- the wild horses, the bouncing boobs on the motorcycle, Kanye's outstretched arms, the wind machine. It's genius. And it opened the door for the Seth Rogen/James Franco version that, amazingly, managed to take the whole thing to an even greater level.
