Journalism Has a New Ally: Kickstarter?

Just when you thought no one cared about the media anymore comes public outcry to save reporting.

In the form of crowdsourcing favorite website, KickstarterWait, what!? 

According to the Pew Research Council, over the past six years, there have been 658 journalism-related projects proposed on Kickstarter. They all either matched or exceeded the originally requested amount for a total of about $6.3 million.

That’s advocacy for reporting.

The amount of money put into these projects grew as well, from $49,256 in 2009 and $263,352 in 2010 to $1,743,668 in the first nine months of 2015.

Actually, this may show something deeper than just advocacy. There is an outcry for information and the basics of that whole First Amendment.

It is bringing voice and visibility to efforts that would likely otherwise go unnoticed or unfunded, adding yet another way for the public to engage in creating, funding and disseminating journalism and adding one more option to the arsenal of revenue sources that the industry is desperately seeking to build up.

There is no telling if this desire to save the media will have any affect but it is refreshing to see. Now if only there was a Kickstarter project to bring back objectivity in journalism.
