Jason Alexander's Epic Apology

Seinfeld star and Jenny Craig success story Jason Alexander stepped in it big time when he called cricket "a gay sport" during an appearance on The Late Late Show last week. Judging by the quotes here, he didn't just stop with one dumb comment, but decided to go all-in with some others. Ass. Anyways, after a firestorm erupted, Alexander issued an apology on the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) website. But not just any apology. An epic letter that goes on for hundreds of words that not only goes back to the incident at hand, but talks about the nature of comedy, where the jokes came from, the media attention that bullying is getting, and the deeper reason why his comments were offensive. He writes: So, I would like to say – I now get it. And to the extent that these jokes made anyone feel even more isolated or misunderstood or just plain hurt – please know that was not my intention, at all or ever. I hope we will someday live in a society where we are so accepting of each other that we can all laugh at jokes like these and know that there is no malice or diminishment intended. Everyone at some point has to apologize and here's a case where it wasn't just a "sorry if I hurt your feelings" kind of thing. It sounds like Alexander actually wanted to convey that he looked very closely at what he said, what the reaction was, and why the jokes didn't go over well. It's something that company execs should take note of when their big crisis moment strikes.
