Japanese Restaurant Fines Guests Who Don't Clean Their Plates
When we were young, our waste-averse parents would often refuse to let us have dessert unless we ate everything on our plates, thereby joining the “clean plate club”. Japanese seafood restaurant Hachikyo has gotten a lot of media attention this week by taking that concept to its logical conclusion and fining any diner who orders its famous salmon roe with rice and “leaves even a single bite of food.”
Why? Because the restaurant’s owner used to be a fisherman, and he demands that every guest respect his colleagues–the fine is effectively a donation to fishermen who work under life-threatening conditions to feed the public’s seafood addiction.
