Dolce & Gabbana Comments Against IVF Spark Celebrity Backlash

Usually a favorite of celebrities around the world looking for something fashionable to wear on the red carpet, Dolce & Gabbana are getting an ear full today from some famous names about how out of step with current times their comments on IVF are. In an interview with the Italian publication Panorama, a quote attributed to both Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana says they have a major problem with in-vitro fertilization. "No chemical children: life has a natural course, there are things that shouldn't be modified," they say. The magazine also notes that they emphasized their belief in "the importance of relationships within conventional families with very, very traditional values." The comments sparked immediate outrage. The most vocal opponent has been Elton John, who quickly turned to Instagram to call for a boycott. How dare you refer to my beautiful children as "synthetic". And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. Now #BoycottDolceGabbana is trending on Twitter. The two are trying to defend their position, with Gabbana saying, "We firmly believe in democracy and the fundamental principle of freedom of expression that upholds it." However, he took a more combative stance on his IG account, asking, "[T]his is ️the real respect for a different opinion????" (CNN says he went so far as to call Sir Elton a "fascist" in an IG comment that has since been removed.) For his part, Dolce says he attributes his feelings to the "traditional family" that he grew up with in Sicily, noting that this is his "personal view" and he is "very well aware of the fact that there are other types of families and they are as legitimate as the one I've known." "The comments struck some as hypocritical coming from a couple that was romantically involved until 2005 (they continued working together after the breakup)," adds CNN. Family values isn't the typical topic for fashion designers to be speaking about so passionately and with such seeming frequency. But if you are going to jump into this discussion, you'd better be ready for strong differences of opinion. When you've got a lot of famous connections and a high profile, that only makes the response even louder.
