Today the office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio named Andrea Hagelgans, VP of strategic comms and media at New York/Washington-based firm Camino Public Relations, as its Director of Cabinet Communications. In April, de Blasio announced plans to “retool” his communications team.

A bit of backstory: BerlinRosen Public Affairs received a large share of the credit for handling de Blasio’s campaign (which won one of the most lopsided victories in recent memory). But de Blasio’s office has struggled to find a new comms director after campaign manager and former Obama for America director Lis Smith resigned on inauguration day amid tabloid coverage of her relationship with former attorney general and would-be comptroller Eliot Spitzer.

From snowstorms to fights over pre-K funding and daughter Chiara’s very public discussion about substance abuse, de Blasio has faced a series of crises over the past six months without a primary communications director in place.
