Sports broadcaster Bob Costas is drawing cheers this morning following last night’s Rock Center interview with former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who has been charged with crimes tied with that school’s child sexual abuse scandal. Costas’ tough line of questioning went into sometimes graphic detail about the allegations against Sandusky.
Oprah Winfrey and CNN’s Paul Begala are among those commending Costas on a job well done. And, according to the @NBCNewsPR Twitter feed, Bob Costas is the second most searched term on Google this morning.
Costas also appeared on Morning Joe today to talk about the interview and his new book. During today’s interview he classified some of Sandusky’s answers as “odd” and “very strange.” We’ve got that clip, care of Huffington Post, after the jump.
Costas also said that the decision was made to allow Sandusky to do the phoner moments before his attorney was meant to give the Rock Center interview. On today’s Morning Media Menu, we talked with GalleyCat editor Jason Boog about whether allowing Sandusky to do the interview was a smart PR move.
As we stated, the biggest and most important issue here, of course, is finding the truth and helping any victims of this awful and tragic situation. Shame on all of you who may be involved in any crimes and their cover up.
But to the point about Sandusky doing this interview, usually defendants refrain from too much media exposure because of exactly what happened last night: Sandusky was faced with some difficult questions and his responses did more harm than good. At one point, Sandusky said that if he could “concede anything,” to use Costas’ words, he wouldn’t have showered with the kids. Later, Costas asked point blank if Sandusky was a pedophile.
