This PRNewser moderated a conversation at yesterday’s Career Circus conference titled, “How to Build a Meaningful Public Profile and Social Presence, and Why It’s Essential.”

Lindsay Pollak, author, speaker and consultant for LinkedIn, urged attendees to “listen twice as much as you talk.” She stressed that too many people are just “showing up” on Twitter, LinkedIn or other social networks, but not engaging or embracing them to their fullest.

“People throw up a page, but they don’t actively manage it,” she said. Pollak also said that you shouldn’t spread yourself thin on social networks, and instead choose the ones that are most relevant to your profession. For example, she mentioned for graphic designers or Tumblr for photographers.
