Though famously willing to take on debt, Americans aren't anxiety-free about it. Mediamark Research Inc. polling found 57 percent of adults are "very uncomfortable with borrowing money; essentially, they hate doing it." Another 13 percent are "credit-reluctant." So, do these people scrupulously avoid debt? Not quite: 52 percent of those who admit they always or usually carry a credit-card balance also placed themselves in the most borrowing-averse category.
