NEW YORK A green message, feel-good animation, a catchy tune peppered with whistles—where have we seen that before? BP takes a page from Honda's award-winning cheery ode to cleaner engines in this latest spot from Ogilvy & Mather, New York, that features '60s-style animation to tout its "beyond petroleum" message. Four tots are merrily riding in a car, singing "Say hey, make the day a little better," when the gas gauge starts titling towards empty. They pass a couple of dreary, uninviting gas stations when they come upon the bright green and yellow BP station with whistling gas pumps. They refill, high-five and happily drive off into the sunset as screen copy explains, "Gas stations, a little better, baby." It's a cute enough spot, and it does stand out on air, but why exactly are babes alone in carland? The driver is sucking on a pacifier! Other spots make more sense; a family makes a pit stop at BP in a longer commercial, but even cheery cartoon characters can't do much to convince viewers that oil company is making things better.
