BOSTON Havas' Arnold has hired Matt Ryan, a former Roth Associates consultant, as executive director for North America, a new position that mixes new-business oversight, client service, contract development and staff recruitment.
Ryan, 44, started yesterday and reports to agency CEO Ed Eskandarian.
"Arnold bounces between good and great," said Ryan. "I think it's got a remarkable, unique culture [and] it has more global client potential than people realize."
His arrival comes days after a big blow: Arnold's loss of the $400 million U.S. and Canadian Volkswagen business to MDC Partners' Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Miami [Adweek Online, Sept. 6]. Layoffs are expected after the account shifts in early December, but the exact number of cuts has not been determined.
Prior to Arnold, Ryan was executive vice president and parter at Roth in New York, where he helped negotiate agency-client contracts and managed agency searches including Quaker State's $25 million creative review last year. Before Roth, Ryan was president and CEO of Change Technology Partners. Before Change, Ryan was founder, CEO and president of Ryan Drossman & Partners, which has since been rebranded as MARC USA.
"Matt brings a great deal of experience in our industry and he has a different perspective—the perspective of the client," said Eskandarian. "It's going to be invaluable for us."
In his new post, Ryan, a Massachusetts native, will head up a group of clients including Denver-based Boston Market. The other clients have yet to be determined, according to Ryan.
Ryan will take an active role in new business development and participate in client pitches. He wiill also help recruit top talent to Boston-based Arnold.
"This agency, despite having great success, isn't done yet," said Ryan. "[The position at Arnold] was literally the offer you couldn't say no to. The agency has a wonderful culture and room to grow into places they haven't even been yet."
