The Midwest award season is in full swing, and creatives got a workout over the weekend walking to podiums and lifting awards in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Mo., and Madison, Wis.
Best of Show honors in Indianapolis went to Bates USA Midwest for an Indianapolis Colts TV spot. The agency won 27 Addys and 16 citations of excellence. Young & Laramore took the most trips to the podium--a total of 66 awards, 39 of them Addys. The other big winner was Caldwell VanRiper/Marc, with 11 Addys and 25 citations.
"The work showed good thinking," said judge Mark Rosenthal, an associate creative director at Creative Alliance in Louisville, Ky. "I don't consider [Indianapolis] to be a Minneapolis or a Richmond yet, but the potential is there."
Other judges were Greg Thomas, creative director of Bill Brokaw Advertising in Cleveland; Joe Milla, creative director at Peterson Milla Hooks in Minneapolis; Jim Nelson, group creative director at Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis; and Steve Wolfberg, creative director at Cronin and Co. in Glastonbury, Conn.
Judges at the Cincinnati Addys said they were also treated to "some surprisingly good work," said Jayanta, an art director (who uses only his first name) at The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va. "Overall, they seemed like they got it as an ad community."
The other judges were Jon Stewart, associate creative director at Campbell-Ewald, Warren, Mich.; and Eran Thomson, who has recently joined Bartle Bogle Hegarty in New York.
Best of Show in Cincinnati went to The Creative Department for its Americana "Major Fun" TV spot. The shop won 26 awards, six of them Addys, making it the most recognized agency in the competition. HSR Business to Business brought home the most Addys--seven--among its 26 wins. Northlich won 32 awards, two of which were Addys.
At the Kansas City Ad Club's Omni awards, which serve as the city's Addys, the creative team of Paul Diamond, John January and Tug McTighe won Best of Show for their freelance "Yoda Training" spot for the Sci-Fi Channel. Barkley Evergreen & Partners took home the most total awards with 37. Muller + Co. won 36 Omnis, including nine Gold, the most for any agency.
In Madison Planet Design led the way with 30 Addys and a best of show award for a TV campaign for Isthmus. The Hiebing Group was next with 11 Addys, while Lindsay, Stone & Briggs claimed nine.
