In a segment that was heavily promoted over the last few days, NBC Nightly News last night did a report on the new wave of shock-vertising (there's no direct URL—look for the headline, "Advertisers: Out to Shock You"). It featured some fan favorites, such as the new "car crash" Volkswagen ads from Crispin, Porter + Bogusky, the New York State antismoking commercial featuring the guy with the tracheotomy (pictured here), and the print ad we saw for the first time a couple of days ago instructing parents how to write an obituary for their teenager who dies from sniffing. The talking heads selected for the piece are former Young & Rubicam exec Tim Pollak and The One Club’s Kevin Swanepoel. Despite the gruesome footage, the piece had what might be termed a happy ending: everyone involved decided the ads work.
