Terry McDonell, editor of the Time Inc. Sports Group, is expected to tell the staff Thursday that 16 editorial staffers will be leaving the staff, three of them layoffs and 13 voluntary departures.
The group that includes Sports Illustrated, Golf and SI Kids, asked for volunteers three weeks ago to avoid laying off up to 16 people, or about 8 percent of a 210-person staff. “The process is complete,” a spokesperson said. Under deals hammered out with the company, the 13 will leave the company over the next nine months.
Fears that SI’s photography staff of nine would be decimated appear to be founded after all. The Sports Group wouldn’t provide details about the layoffs, but sources said one photographer was laid off and three volunteered to leave.
The company has described the cost-cutting move as part of a plan to reorganize the editorial staff around type of sports rather than by media platform. McDonell is expected to announce details of the new organizational structure in the coming weeks.
