If you think Hackensack stinks now, wait until the smell-o-riffic cotton-candy billboard trucks from the State Fair Meadowlands begin parking at malls around the northern New Jersey area. Kidding, of course. Michelle Tartaglione, managing director of the Garden State fair, offers assurances that the odiferous outdoor effort, unleashed by ad agency NJ Creative Direction, "smells wonderful." So, it must be true. The client hopes the ads—which use a fabric saturated with the sweet scent and can be enjoyed via scratch-and-sniff or hands-free whiff—will evoke nostalgic memories of old-time state fairs. Frankly, a pungent snootful of regurgitated chili con carny would've done it for for me. (Carnys are such drunken slobs. Man, I wish I was a carny.) Oh, and I apologize to Hackensack for that cheap shot earlier. Newark smells worse.
