WPIX, Tribune's CW affiliate in New York, is killing its 6:30 p.m. newscast to focus on its morning and late newscasts.
Beginning June 28, the station will move Inside Edition at 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., to make way for back-to-back episodes of Friends. Inside Edition will move to 4 a.m. to lead-into PIX Morning News.
WPIX launched the 6:30 p.m. newscast in Sept. 2009, but ratings never caught on, bested by the network TV newscasts and other programming that aired opposite WPIX's news.
The end of the 6:30 p.m. news isn't the only change at the station in recent weeks, headed by the firing of Betty Ellen Berlamino earlier in the month and veteran anchor Jim Watkins. Jerry Kersting, named president of Tribune Broadcasting in May, will be overseeing the station while it hunts for a new GM.
