Fox has renewed animated sitcom The Simpsons for another two seasons, taking it though 2010-11. Historically, this will make The Simpsons, which debuted on Dec. 17, 1989 (and originated from a sketch on The Tracey Ullman Show) the longest running regularly scheduled prime-time scripted series in the history of television.
Current leader Gunsmoke (1955-75) still leads the pack of scripted dramas, but NBC’s Law & Order is just one year shy of tying that record.
