Former NBC Universal and AOL executive Randy Falco has joined Spanish-language media company Univision Communications as evp and chief operating officer, the company said today.

The COO post at Univision has been vacant since the retirement of Ray Rodriquez at the end of 2009.

Falco’s appointment is effective immediately. He will oversee all revenue-producing functions at Univision, including ad sales, distribution and affiliate relations, as well as the operations of the company’s television and radio station groups, corporate marketing, research and business development, the firm said. Falco will be based in New York and report to Joe Uva, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

“Randy brings more than 30 years of experience across traditional and digital media that will help us build on the significant existing and untapped opportunities for revenue growth across our organization,” Uva said.

Falco joins an executive leadership team that includes Cesar Conde, president of Univision Networks; Kevin Conroy, president of Univision Interactive Media; Andrew Hobson, senior evp and chief financial officer; and C. Douglas Kranwinkle, evp and general counsel, all of whom will continue to report directly to Uva.

In a statement Falco commented, “The 2010 Census will clearly shed additional light on the coming of age story for both the company and Hispanic population. I’m excited to be joining Univision at such a pivotal moment in its history.”

Previously, Falco held the position of chairman and CEO of AOL, from which he departed in 2009. Prior to AOL, Falco spent more than 30 years in varying roles at NBCU, culminating with his role as president and COO of NBC Universal Television Group. In that role, which included oversight of Univision competitor Telemundo, Falco was responsible for the group’s operating and commercial functions. Earlier in his NBCU career, Falco was COO of the company’s Olympics operations in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2002; Sydney, Australia, in 2000; Atlanta in 1996; and Barcelona, Spain, in 1992.
