The 2009-10 National Football League season got off to a strong start, as Fox, NBC and ESPN posted big numbers in Week One.

Sunday’s Fox NFL doubleheader averaged 19.5 million viewers, an increase of 29 percent versus last season’s opener. The network’s 4 p.m. national game, an NFC East showdown between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, served up a whopping 25.1 million viewers, up 20 percent versus the year-ago Cowboys-Browns opener.

The Giants-Skins game now stands as the most-watched Week One contest since 1996.

In regional action, Fox averaged 14.1
