Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 27 percent at this same point last year to approximately 33 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted. ---------- -Friday’s Winners:Nothing -Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):Supernanny (ABC), Dollhouse (Fox), Shark Tank (ABC), The Jay Leno Show (NBC) ---------- -Ratings Breakdown:CBS led the Friday troops, beating the No. 2 network (NBC in total viewers, ABC among adults 18-49) by 1.99 million viewers and 20 percent in the demo. But modest performances for the Eye net’s combination of Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: #1, 8.34 million; A18-49: #1, 1.9 rating/6 share), Medium (Viewers: #1, 7.98 million; A18-49: #1, 1.8/ 6) and Numb3rs (Viewers: #1, #1, 8.70 million; A18-49: #1, 1.8/ 5) only proves how troubled this evening has become. Despite their dominance, none of these performances should be labeled as “winners.” NBC opened the evening with a repeat of Law & Order (Viewers: #2, 6.76 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.3/ 4 at 8 p.m.), which moves to Mondays at 10 p.m. effective on March 1 (with back-to-back episodes), followed by Dateline (Viewers: #2, 7.35 million; A18-49: #3t, 1.4/ 4) and canceled The Jay Leno Show (Viewers: #3, 4.95 million; A18-49: #3, 1.4/ 4) from 9-11 p.m. ABC aired its usual combination of Supernanny (Viewers: #3, 4.72 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.3/ 4), which goes on hiatus on March 26 in favor of the returning Wife Swap, Shark Tank (Viewers: #3, 4.38 million; A18-49: #2, 1.5/ 5), which concludes next Friday, and veteran 20/20 (Viewers: #2, 8.07 million; A18-49: #2, 1.7/ 5), which is worthy of positive mention due to the growth out of Shark Tank. In series-finale news, Fox’s Dollhouse went out with a whimper at just 2.16 million viewers and a 0.8/ 3 among adults 18-49 -- last in both categories at 8 p.m. Regardless, you have to give Fox credit for at least running the episodes. Next week, Fox will fill the time period with a repeat of House. That led into the season-premiere of Kitchen Nightmares at 3.28 million viewers (#4) and a 1.4/ 4 in the demo (#3t) at 9 p.m. While Kitchen Nightmares is nothing to boast about, it did build from Dollhouse by 1.12 million viewers and 75 percent in the demo. Over at The CW were two episodes of long-running Smallville -- an original and a repeat. The original telecast finished fourth at 8 p.m. (ahead of Dollhouse), with 2.52 million viewers and a 1.1/ 4 among adults 18-49. Mirroring all season, Smallville remains a noticeable improvement over year-ago occupants Everybody Hates Chris and The Game. The encore telecast was fifth at 9 p.m., with 1.48 million viewers and a 0.6/ 2. And there you have it…that is boring Friday. CBS opened the evening with repeat made-for Hallmark Hall of Fame’s The Magic of Ordinary Days, which was above-average for the network in the 8-10 p.m. block with 7.32 million viewers and a 1.0 rating/3 share among adults 18-49. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown: Hallmark Hall of Fame’s The Magic of Ordinary Days R (CBS)8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 5.95 million (#2), A18-49: 0.8/ 2 (#2)8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 7.13 million (#1), A18-49: 0.9/ 3 (#2)9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 7.85 million (#1), A18-49: 1.1/ 3 (#2)9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 8.34 million (#1), A18-49: 1.2/ 4 (#2) Leading out of the movie encore was long-running 48 Hours Mystery at a dominant 7.11 million viewers and a 1.5/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Fox, of course, aired its perennial combination of Cops (original and repeat – Viewers: #2, avg. 6.19 million; A18-49: #1, avg. 2.0/ 7) from 8-9 p.m. and compatible America’s Most Wanted (Viewers: #2, 5.62 million; A18-49: #1, 1.8/ 6 at 9 p.m.). As I say all the time, both Cops and America’s Most Wanted will outlive us all.Next up was low-rated NBC with its line-up of 8 p.m. special Truth in Motion: The U.S. Ski Team’s Road to Vancouver (Viewers: #4, 1.78 million; A18-49: #4, 0.5/ 2), a repeat of Law & Order (Viewers: #3, 3.79 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 2), and a repeat of Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #2, 5.12 million; A18-49: #2, 1.2/ 3). Take a look at the half-hour breakdown: The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards (CBS) 8:00 p.m.: 17.6/26 (#1) 8:30 p.m.: 18.9/27 (#1) 9:00 p.m.: 18.4/26 (#1) 9:30 p.m.: 18.8/27 (#1)10:00 p.m.: 18.7/28 (#1)10:30 p.m.: 16.3/26 (#1) Earlier in the evening on CBS was old faithful 60 Minutes at an also first-place 9.1/15 in the overnights from 7-8 p.m. Second-place ABC, which battled The Grammys with an all original slate of programming, took a hit, no doubt. Veteran America’s Funniest Home Videos finished second behind 60 Minutes in the overnights, with a 4.7/ 8 at 7 p.m. That led into aging Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (#2: 4.9/ 7 at 8 p.m.), followed by Desperate Housewives (#2: 7.9/11) and Brothers & Sisters (#2: 5.8/ 9) from 9-11 p.m. Worth positively noting for Desperate Housewives, of course, is the ongoing growth out of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Without football, NBC has its work cut out on Sunday. Based on the overnight markets, CBS Television Distribution’s Oprah rose to a 7.5 weighted household rating on Jan. 28, which finished as the fourth highest rated telecast of the talker this season. The prior highs were an episode featuring Sarah Palin and a two-parter with Whitney Houston. Melissa will play the grown-up former wild-child of a political family who happens to now be a politician, while Joey is her new “manny.” Sounds like Who’s the Boss? doesn’t it? Melissa & Joey is expected to debut later in the year. -Confirmed Clearances for Nate Berkus:It looks like Oprah’s fourth spin-off, The Nate Berkus Show, will be moving forward as planned for fall 2010. Sony Pictures Television has announced a deal with NBC Universal for clearances on all 10 of the NBC owned-and-operated stations, which include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Miami and Hartford. The deal comes on the heels of Martha Stewart announcing she is leaving NBC Universal and first-run syndication for cable net The Hallmark Channel next fall. -More Parks and Recreation:Personally speaking, I do not understand NBC’s interest in struggling comedy Parks and Recreation. But for whatever reason, the network has renewed the Amy Poehler half-hour for a third season, with an unspecified number of new episodes for 2010-11. Season to-date, Parks and Recreation is averaging just 5.09 million viewers in the Thursday 8:30 p.m. time period, placing it No. 91 out of 129 shows. -Speaking of Renewals:MTV has re-upped non-scripted Jersey Shore for a second season, with an order for 12 new episodes to begin airing this summer. Teen Mom, meanwhile, has been renewed for right new episodes. -Johnny Bravo Celebrates Valentine’s Day on Cartoon Network:Cartoon Network, the home of must see animation, will present an 8 and one-half hour Valentine’s Day marathon of Johnny Bravo on Sunday, Feb. 14 beginning at 12 p.m. ET. -News from Steve Rotfeld Productions:Steve Rotfeld Productions, an independent television production and broadcast syndication company, has announced renewals on three of its FCC-friendly series: Wild About Animals, Awesome Adventures and Whaddyado. Twice weekly Wild About Animals and Awesome Adventures have been cleared in 29 of the top 30 markets, representing 85 percent of the country. Groups represented include the Fox O&Os, Cox, Local TV, Media General, Raycom and Tribune. Season five of Whaddyado, which looks at real stories of people in trouble and advises them how to respond, has been cleared in 27 of the top 30 markets, representing 80 percent of the U.S. Represented station groups include the CBS O&OS, Barrington, Cox, Raycom Media, Sinclair and Tribune.
