Marking the end of an era, Mark Mays told Clear Channel employees Tuesday that he would step down as chief executive officer of the company by year’s end. He will remain chairman of the board.

His father founded the firm in 1972 and built it into the largest radio and outdoor company in the U.S.

The board of directors has not yet named a successor in the CEO position.

His exit will mark the first time a Mays isn’t running the radio and outdoor company.
