I look at my phone, which I’m not really proud of, to be honest. I have friends in other parts of the world, so sometimes I’ll have an interesting email from someone who’s been up for five hours before me. How do you get your news? I don’t read a paper newspaper anymore, but I read The New York Times online. My husband is the real news junkie, but because of the subject of my show, I’ve been compulsively reading the news lately. I also watch Democracy Now. The other place I get my news is actually through Twitter. Are you involved with any other social media? No, I’m not. When I first learned about Twitter, which was maybe a year and a half ago, I was really into it for a minute, but I’ve fallen off. I think it’s because I belabor it too much. I did a New York Times talk recently with three other actresses, and I noticed that they all tweeted about it as soon as we were done—“Great time, thank you all so much,” you know. And I meant to do that, but I just didn’t. I was too worried about remembering all of their Twitter handles and putting it all together. I want it to be perfect. What are your favorite TV shows? I like Girls. I really liked Enlightened when it was on; I was sorry to see it go. I’ve been told that I need to watch Louie, so I think I’m going to get into that. Enlightened Girls Louie What’s on your reading list? I just actually started reading again about six months ago. To be totally honest, I hadn’t read a novel in years, but then I read about five books in the past couple of months. I’m in the middle of The Sense of an Ending, which won the Booker Prize, which I’m enjoying. I also read this book called Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill. The first few pages feel like you’re reading postcards—it almost seems a little trite—and then as you get into it, it becomes really beautiful. And I loved Alice Munro’s book of short stories called Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage. What music have you been listening to lately? I’m kind of late to it, but I really like James Blake. There’s this bluegrass guy called Willie Watson that’s great. And also this wild album that [my husband] Peter [Sarsgaard] gave me called Sun Kil Moon. You’re a regular presence in fashion magazines and blogs. Do you read them? I don’t read fashion magazines because I find that they make me feel bad for a number of reasons. As far as the blogs, as much as I try not to read them, once in a while if I’ve worn a dress that I thought was particularly beautiful, I’ll look up the pictures online and check to see if everyone loved it, and without fail, no, they did not love it. Sometimes the blogs can be just lovely and real admirers of fashion, and other times, they can be intentionally vicious and disgusting .
