History on Sunday night delivered some monumental ratings, as the opening salvo of the network’s 12-hour, six-part special America: The Story of Us drew 5.67 million viewers.Leading off with a special introduction recorded by President Barack Obama, the first two-hour installment of America takes viewers back to the nation’s earliest hours, when the unrelenting will of the Jamestown settlers is tested by starvation, disease and the incumbent Powhatans. The episode closes as the country gains its independence from Great Britain.America averaged 2.59 million viewers 18-49 and 2.68 million adults 25-54, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day ratings. It now stands as the most-watched special in the network’s history.In his introduction to the series, the President noted that the American narrative has always been written by its citizens. “Our story...was made possible by ordinary people who kept their moral compass pointed straight and true when the way seemed treacherous, when the climb seemed steep, and when the future seemed uncertain,” Obama said. “People who recognized a fundamental part of our American character––that we can remake ourselves, and our nation, to fit our larger dreams.”Episode two premieres on History this Sunday (May 2) at 9 p.m. EDT.
