Fox, Cablevision Standoff Sours

Just when everyone thought the retransmission battle between Fox and Cablevision couldn’t get any nastier, Fox Tuesday (Oct. 26) sent a cease-and-desist letter to Cablevision for telling its subscribers how to watch NFL and Major League Baseball games on illegal Web sites.

The letter from Fox attorney John Hooper of Reed Smith to James Dolan, CEO of Cablevision, accuses the cable system of “materially contributing” to copyright infringement.
Fox found out about Cablevision’s questionable customer service when a Fox employee, who happened to be a Cablevision subscriber, taped a Cablevision customer rep saying that the games could be viewed on Web sites that were pirating the Fox signals.
