Analysis: Subscription TV Market Suffers Historic Decline

For the first time in history, subscription TV lost subscribers in second quarter. According to a new SNL Kagan analysis released Monday (Aug. 23), cable, DBS and telco video collectively lost 216,000 customers to 100.1 million in the quarter, compared to a 378,000 gain during the same period last year.

Blame the economy. “Although it is tempting to point to over-the-top video as a potential culprit, we believe economic factors such as low housing formation and a high unemployment rate contributed to subscriber declines,” said Mariam Rondeli.
