AMC and Sony TV Save Final Season of 'Breaking Bad'

Both will contribute to the show's $3M budget

It looks like AMC’s Breaking Bad will stay on the network for the rest of its run.

Following difficult negotiations between AMC and the show’s producer, Sony Pictures TV, the two have finally agreed to a deal to renew the series for a final 16 episodes, Deadline reported. The episodes will be filmed together but could be split into two seasons.

Earlier this month, as AMC pushed for cuts to both Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, people complained that the network’s massive Mad Men budget was bleeding its other series dry. Sony was reportedly so frustrated that it began shopping Breaking Bad to other networks.

Yesterday’s deal was finalized just in time to avoid two deadlines. The series’ license deal with AMC was set to expire today, and the options on its actors expire on Aug. 31. As for who will cover the show’s $3 million budget, Deadline says that AMC and Sony reached a compromise in which both will contribute to the sum.

Now, Sony has to reach a deal with show runner Vince Gilligan, whose contract doesn’t extend past season 4. The cast may also renegotiate their deals.
