Shira Lazar wants to be the next Jerry Lewis.
Okay, she didn’t say that—but the ubiquitious Web host wants to bring some of that old-school, let’s-put-on-a-show variety feel to the Web. Lazar has lined up a slew of bold-faced Web names to appear on tonight’s episode of her daily video series What’s Trending. Dubbed the Tube-a-Tweet-a-Thon Holiday Spectacular, tonight’s show—live on YouTube from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST— will feature a variety fo acts looking to help raise money for Covenant House, which is raising funds for children whose homes were impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
“The online space doesn’t have a show where everyone comes together,” said Lazar. “We haven't experimented with this yet, so the Tube-a-Tweet-a-Thon is sort of an ode to that for digital age. And we’ve lined up some incredible talent.”
Indeed, while it’s not The Rolling Stones and The Who, the Tube-a-Tweet-a-Thon is something of a who’s who of YouTube and geek cuture stars. Scheduled to perform are iJustine, the casts of Epic Meal Time and The Annoying Orange and Hannah Hart (My Drunk Kitchen). Other perfomers include comedian Kevin Pollack, Heather McDonald (Chelsea Lately), Janina Gavankar (True Blood) and Zachary Levi (former Chuck star and founder of The Nerd Machine).
What’s Trending sponsor Virgin Mobile is helping Lazar and her team raise money and collect donations. Viewers can donate via Twitter, using the hashtag #Tubeathon or on the Web at Virginmobilelive.com/donate. Virgin is also planning on donating $1 for every tweet using the #Tubeathon hashtag, up to $50,000.
“We’re really trying to create a new format here, one with an entire social experience,” said Lazar, who hopes to make the Tube-a-Tweet-a-Thon an annual event. “It’s important for this medium to have a place and a format to connect to an audience in this way.”
