Tweeting a Starbucks Coffee Is Now a Thing

Twitter takes another step into commerce

Twitter and Starbucks are letting consumers send each other coffee gifts via a tweet.

Want to get in good graces with a Twitter pal? Type "@tweetacoffee to" and then the Twitter handle of the recipient before sending your tweet. At first the gifts are limited to $5, but, if the pilot is successful, Starbucks will likely expand the possibilities.

To participate, consumers must sync their Starbucks, Twitter and credit card accounts. To encourage activity among Visa members, the initial 100,000 folks who sync their cards from that credit firm will get a $5 gift card for themselves after they tweet a gift to someone. The gift cards can be utilized as a print copy or if they are loaded to a Starbucks digital card.

It's just the latest attempt by social and mobile marketers to create commerce via their platforms. A few years ago, Pepsi debuted "social vending machines" that let consumers buy sodas for friends and send the gift via mobile.

And Starbucks for quite some time has been offering Facebook users the chance to send friends birthday gifts from its bevy of coffee and food products.

Meanwhile, Twitter takes another step into developing a viable commerce platform in the weeks before its expected initial public offering. The San Francisco tech giant has been working with American Express for several months, enticing users to send gifts via hashtags and tweets.
